India, Russia Armies to Jointly Exercise in August

Indian and Russian armies will hold their biennial joint counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency exercise at the Buryatia military training base in southeast Russia close to the Mongolian border in August this year. The fourth in the Indra series of exercise, the 2012 edition will witness participation from 250 troops each from India and Russia. The two sides will match their combat skills and try and understanding the operating procedures of each other, according to officers in the army headquarters. India to Induct Russian Mi-17V5 in 10 Days

India will formally induct its latest Russian military acquisition, Mi-17V5 helicopters, on February 17, about 10 days from now. Defence Minister AK Antony will that day formally hand over the keys to the first squadron of Mi-17V5 helicopters to the Indian Air Force, marking its entry into Indian service, at a function to be held at Hindon air base in Ghaziabad just outside the national capital. The first two squadrons of these helicopters will be based in Bhatinda in Punjab and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, IAF officers said here. Read More...

India Proposes To Initiate Production of Torpedoes in Kyrgyzstan

India has recently revealed its plans to invest in a facility in Kyrgyzstan with the intention to produce advanced torpedoes which will augment its underwater strike capabilities. The Torpedo Testing Center is located in Karakul province and the facility has been visited earlier by Defence Minister A.K.Anthony. India will now send a team to gauge the feasibility of the project and its co-development. Read More...

IAF Ignores Russia, Floats Global Tender for Maintenance of Ilyushin Aircraft

The Indo-Russian military relations are wavering once again as India has decided to look beyond Russia for long-term maintenance and product support for its fleet of Ilyushin-76 heavy transports and Ilyushin-78M tanker transports. The Indian Air force (IAF) has been put off by Russia’s dithering attitude when it comes to providing spares and service to India and has decided to look support from elsewhere since the Russian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is not forthcoming.
