DRDO Scientists Named For India's Highest Civilian Awards

India has named its three key defence scientists for receiving their highest civilian awards this year. President Pranab Mukherjee approved their names to receive the Padma awards as part of the 108 persons chosen for the honour. Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Director General, was chosen for the Padma Bhushan award, which is the second highest civilian award of the country. Nirbhay First Test-Firing in February

The first test-firing of the test sub-sonic, medium range cruise missile Nirbhay, will be carried out in February off the coast of Odisha. Nirbhay is being developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Defence Research and Development Organisation lab based here, V K Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, told a press conference here. "This is in the final stage of integration and we expect to launch it next month", Saraswat, also Secretary in the Department of Defence (R&D) and DRDO Director General, said. INS Saryu OPV Joins Indian Navy

Indian Navy has inducted a newly-built Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) that will enhance its ocean surveillance and patrolling capabilities. India's Port Blair-based tri-services Andaman and Nicobar Command chief Air Marshal P.K. Roy formally commissioned the ship into the Indian Navy at an event in Goa. The OPV, indigenously designed and built by the Indian defence public sector Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), demonstrates the immense potential of the country's indigenous ship designing and building capabilities, an Indian Navy officer said. Goa Shipyard Hands Over INS Saryu to Indian Navy

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has handed over to the Indian Navy the newly built INS Saryu, the largest offshore patrol vessel of the force. The indigenously-designed 105-metre vessel was handed over by GSL Chairman Rear Admiral (Retired) Vineet Bakhshi to Commander Amanpreet Singh, the Commanding Officer-designate of INS Saryu, in Goa, according to the shipyard officials. The offshore patrol vessel will help meet the Indian Navy's ever increasing requirement for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations in order to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty, they said. DRDO, York Varsity Sign Research Cooperation Pact

India's premier Defence research agency and Canada's York University have signed an agreement under which the two institutions will jointly pursue collaborative Defence research in areas of advanced material, nanotechnology, chemical and biological Defence, and sensors. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) in this regard was signed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Director General Dr VK Saraswat and York University Vice President (Research and Innovation) Dr Robert Hache here.
