DCNS France Opens New Facility for Scorpene Project, Seeks More JVS to Make Components Indigenously

The French shipbuilding major DCNS has opened a dedicated facility in Hyderabad in partnership with the local SEC Industries for making critical components for the Scorpene submarines. Phase-2 of Navy’s Karwar Base Expansion Worth $ 2 Billion to Begin after Ccs Approval

The Indian Navy is embarking on a major expansion of the strategic Karwar naval base in the southern state of Karnataka where a host of warships, submarines and the refurbished carrier INS Vikramaditya will be berthed. The expansion of the Karwar naval base will occur under Project Seabird Phase II-A which will entail construction of facilities to the tune of roughly $ 2 billion. India's Defence Shipyards Building 61 Warships, Vessels

India's four Defence public sector shipyards are building a total of 61 warships and vessels for the maritime forces of the country. The four shipyards are Mumbai-based Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL), Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Goa-based Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), which is the latest entrant in governmental warship building in the country. Karwar Naval Base Gears Up For Second Phase of Expansion at a Cost of About $ 3 Billion

Following the recent approval from the Defence Minister AK Antony, the expansion project of the Karwar Naval base at the cost of Rs.13,000 crore ($ 2.9 billion) in Karnataka is gaining momentum. MP Seeks CVC Probe in Navy's Scorpene Torpedo Deal

The Navy's deal for procurement of torpedoes for Scorpene submarines from an Italian company has come in for questioning with a Member of Parliament writing to the Central Vigilance Commission seeking a probe into alleged corruption in the selection. Jainarayan Prasad Nishad, who had earlier written to Defence Minister A K Antony, has alleged that WASS heavy water torpedo was selected for procurement "without validation of critical parameters at sea for speed and range" as specified in the Request for Proposal (RFP).
