Strengthening India's capability to carry out Special Operations, the US has accepted India's request for supplying six more C-130J special operations transport aircraft to the IAF and a communication in this regard was given to the Defence Ministry recently. India had sent a Letter of Request (LoR) to the US government in September last year for procuring six additional C-130J aircraft. The US government submitted a Letter of Acceptance on April 10 to the Indian Defence Ministry for clearance.

A national security task force, headed by former cabinet secretary Naresh Chandra, has submitted its final report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Among the recommendations it has made, the task force, which had 13 others from Defence, intelligence, diplomacy and strategic affairs sectors, wants a major revamp of the structures and operating procedures of security and intelligence agencies. The task force, set up in July 2011, was mandated to review existing processes, procedures and practices in the national security system.

The dismal level of capabilities of the Indian Army which were highlighted by the Indian Army Chief has led the government to sign three Defence deals for the Special Forces and Infantry soldiers. The three new deals pertain to sub-machine guns, thermal imagers and target designators which are aimed at stepping up the surveillance and firepower capabilities of the force. The first deal, worth $ 5.75 million, was signed with M/S B&T Switzerland for the acquisition of 1,568 advanced sub-machine guns for the “Ghatak” platoon of infantry battalions.

For the first time, American and Russian-origin tanks will take on each other on Indian soil as the US and Indian troops get ready to hold the Exercise Yudh Abhyas in the Mahajan field firing ranges in Rajasthan next month. The Indian side will field its Russian-origin T-72 and BMP Infantry Combat vehicles whereas the Americans will come with their M1Abram tanks and Stryker ICVs for the wargames, Army officials said to defencenow.com. During the exercise, the Americans are also going to display the ICV firing capabilities of the Javelin anti-tank guided missiles.

India will formally induct its latest Russian military acquisition, Mi-17V5 helicopters, on February 17, about 10 days from now. Defence Minister AK Antony will that day formally hand over the keys to the first squadron of Mi-17V5 helicopters to the Indian Air Force, marking its entry into Indian service, at a function to be held at Hindon air base in Ghaziabad just outside the national capital. The first two squadrons of these helicopters will be based in Bhatinda in Punjab and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, IAF officers said here.
