INS Tanaji Gets Commssioned by the Navy As It Prepares For INS Sahayadri This Month

Close on the heels of acquiring the stealth frigate INS Teg last fortnight from Russia, Indian Navy is ready to commission two more ships, namely INS Tanaji and INS Sahayadri, in this month itself. While INS Tanaji will be a base depot ship commissioned today, INS Sahayadri will be the third ship of the Shivalik class of stealth frigates for the navy to be commissioned on July 21. INS Sahyadri Commissioning July 21

Adding teeth to its warship fleet, the Indian Navy will July 21 commission INS Sahyadri, the third of the Shivalik class indigenous stealth frigates, in Mumbai. Built at the Mazagon Docks Limited under three-ship Project-17, INS Sahyadri had earlier this year gone through the final sea trials ahead of its induction into the navy. "Sahyadri is scheduled for commissioning into the Indian Navy on July 21," a senior navy officer said. This is the last of the Project-17 warships, the first two being INS Shivalik and INS Satpura. Vice Admiral D K Joshi to be the new Navy Chief

With the Navy set to induct three nuclear and six conventional submarines in the next decade, Government as appointed Vice Admiral D K Joshi, a veteran submariner, as the new naval chief. He will replace Admiral Nirmal Verma who retires on August 31. Vice-Admiral Joshi, a specialist in anti-submarine warfare, had assumed command of the Western Naval Command in May last year. Vice Admiral Joshi, who has also commanded the tri-Service Andaman and Nicobar Island command in the past, has commanded the guided-missile corvette INS Kuthar. Read More...

Shipyard Modernisation Lapses Not Causing Warships Delays: Antony

Defence Minister A K Antony Wednesday said that there was no connection between the delays in modernisation of the defence shipyards and construction of warships. Antony told the Rajya Sabha (House of States in Indian Parliament) during question hour that "there have been initial delays in modernisation programme of Mazagon Docks Limited (based in Mumbai)." However, the delay in modernisation programme has not contributed directly to the delay in ongoing warship construction projects, he said. Read More...

Russia to Begin Delivery of INS Teg and other Talwar Class Stealth Frigates from Early 2012

The Indian Navy is slated to get the stealth frigate INS Teg by early 2012 as Russia has initiated the sea trials of the warship in the Baltic Sea. INS Teg is the first of the three stealth frigates of the Talwar Class which was ordered by India in 2006 under the $ 1.5 billion deal with Russia. Russia is building three Project 11356 Talwar Class (Krivak IV) guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy at the Yantar shipyard in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad. Read More...
