India, Russia Ink Key Defence Pacts

India and Russia have inked defence contracts worth $2.9 billion during the summit meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Vladimir Putin. The two key deals signed were the $1.6-billion worth 42 Su-30MKI combat aircraft that India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will produce at its facility under licence from Russia Rosoboronexport and Sukhoi Corporation and the $1.3-billion worth 71 Mi-17V5 medium lift helicopters, of which 59 will go to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the rest 12 to India's paramilitary forces involved in internal security duties. India, Russia to Sign Key Defence Deals worth $4 Billion

India and Russia are preparing to sign three key defence deals worth $4 billion when Russian President Vladimir Putin comes to New Delhi for a summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 24. Among the deals planned for inking including the final contract for licenced production of 42 Su-30MKI planes by Indian government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, purchase of 71 Mi-17V5 medium lift helicopters and 970 AL-31 aero-engines for the Sukhoi combat aircraft. Give Us Bigger Role in MMRCA, Dassault to Defence Ministry

Seeking a greater responsibility in the MMRCA contract, French firm Dassault Aviation has asked the Defence Ministry to define the role of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in the project. If the contract is finalised, the first 18 aircraft would be supplied by Dassault directly to the Indian Air Force and the remaining 108 would be licence-produced at HAL facilities in Bangalore. The French Dassault has asked the Ministry to define the role of the premier Indian aerospace company in the final delivery of the 108 aircraft to be produced in India, industry sources said here. India to Take Up Gorshkov with Prez Putin

Long delays in the handing over of aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be taken up in a "big way" during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit next month while India is seriously considering imposing a penalty of around Rs 600 crore over the issue. Putin was supposed to visit on Friday but has postponed his visit to December 24. Russia had informed India at the Defence Minister-level talks earlier this month that it would be able to deliver the much-delayed warship only by the end of next year due to malfunctions in its boilers. Despite Gorshkov Delay, India to Acquire Russian Su-30mki and Medium-Lift Choppers

While the visiting Russian Defence Minister has confirmed yet another blow to the Indian Navy by declaring one year delay in Gorshkov carrier delivery, other major military deals are being materialized in New Delhi. India is gearing for the procurement of 42 Su-30 MKI combat aircraft and 71 medium-lift helicopters from Russia. Indian Defence Mister AK Antony and his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov have discussed the issue of the procurement of Su-30 MKI and medium-lift choppers in their meeting earlier.
