Tata Offers Its Trucks for Tatra Replacement

Seeking a share in the pie for supply high-mobility vehicles to the Army, Tata Motors has offered its latest vehicles to the Defence Ministry to replace the controversial Tatra trucks, used so far to carry missiles such as Agni and Prithvi. The procurement of Tatra trucks has been put on hold pending a CBI probe into bribery allegations by former Army chief Gen V K Singh. Tata Motors will make a presentation before Defence Ministry’s Director General (Acquisition) S B Agnihotri about its latest vehicles offered by it to replace Tatra trucks for carrying missile systems of the armed forces such as BrahMos and Pinaka, Defence Ministry sources said here. Armed Forces Begin Hunt For Tatra Replacement

With the Government freezing the acquisition of Tatra trucks, the defence forces have started looking for alternative vehicles to equip them with their missile systems. In view of Defence Ministry's decision to put on hold the procurement of Tatra trucks pending the CBI probe into allegations of bribery by former Army Chief Gen VK Singh, several key missile projects of the Army and the Air Force have been held up. Defence Ministry Struggles to Get Budget Allocation

Defence Ministry is struggling to get even its allocated budget of Rs 1.93 lakh crore allotted by the government in the budget and is not hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40000 crore demanded by it for modernisation. "Now I am struggling to get the budgetary amount," he told reporters here when asked if he was hopeful of getting the additional Rs 40,000 crore sought by his ministry for modernising the three services. Def Min to Seek Law Ministry Advise On Tatra Trucks

The Defence Ministry is facing problems in upkeep of over 7,000 Tatra trucks in the armed forces and is likely to seek advice from the Law Ministry in this regard. The Ministry is likely to seek the opinion of the Law Ministry on how it should go about the maintenance of Tatra trucks as supply of all-terrain vehicles from the UK-based company has been put on hold because of a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in their purchase, sources said here. After getting the view of the Law Ministry, a final decision on the issue may be taken by the Ministry's Defence Acquisition Council, they said here. The issue of maintenance of these trucks is a key area for the armed forces as high-value assets such as strategic missiles and other heavy weapon systems are based on these vehicles. Read More...

Defence Ministry to Cancel Order for Tatra Truck

The Defence Ministry will cancel the BEML order, worth over Rs 50 lakh, given to UK-based Tatra Sipox for supplying one truck, in the wake of the CBI probe into the allegations of irregularities in the supply of these vehicles. The order for the truck was placed by BEML in may for the defence research and development organisation. The Ministry is planing to cancel the order worth over Rs 50 lakh placed by BEML with the UK-based Tatra Sipox, sources told PTI here. When asked about the development, Defence Ministry's Department of Defence Production refused to comment on it. BEML had written a letter to Tatra Sipox in May this year seeking urgent delivery of a Tatra truck for around Euro 88,000 (over Rs 50 lakh). Read More...
