No Budget Cut for Critical Defence Purchases
Even as his Ministry is preparing itself for curtailment of funds, Defence Minister A K Antony today said there will be no cut in budget for procuring equipment essential for operational preparedness of armed forces. "Everything depends on the entire financial situation of the government...for ammunition and platforms essential for operational preparedness of the armed forces, there would not be any cut," he told reporters on the sidelines of an IDSA function here. The Minister was asked if there would be delays in the procurement of weapon systems for armed forces due to economic slowdown and austerity measures.

Pinaka Rocket System to Enter Service This Year As Its Trials Get Underway In Rajasthan
The state-run DRDO and Indian Army have initiated the development trials of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system in Pokhran, Rajasthan this week. The current trials of Pinaka rocket launcher system is being conducted for advanced stage of development of the weapon system. DRDO spokesman said that the trials of Pinaka will continue and the weapon is expected to enter service this year. According to DRDO, the trials of Pinaka rocket launcher system at Pokhran field firing range by Indian Army and DRDO scientists will continue for two days.

U.S Considers Relaxing Defence Export Policies and Seeks Closer Maritime Engagement with India
As a step towards advancement of greater Defence ties, the US is considering reforms in the United States export control system for sensitive dual-use technology and weapon systems for India. With India continuing as the top arms importer in the world, the US aims to win multi-billion contracts for Defence equipment from India by relaxing these laws. In addition, India’s significant geostrategic location and the growing maritime clout have forced the US to have a greater engagement with India to ensure secure international trade through the sea lanes.

Antony Reviews Deficiencies, Requirements of Army
Looking to modernise the armed forces, Defence Minister A K Antony today reviewed the preparedness of the army in a meeting where the deficiencies and requirements of the force were discussed. During the over 90-minute meeting, Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh presented the army's perspective with regard to capital procurements, development of infrastructure and requirements of ammunition, Defence Ministry officials said here. The meeting was held to give a thrust to modernisation of the army, Defence Minister A K Antony said. In his presentation, the Army Chief highlighted the requirements of ammunition.

Indian Air Chief in Malaysia to Strengthen Defence Ties
India and Malaysia are all set to discuss issues pertaining to bilateral defence cooperation as the Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne is on a four-day visit to Kula Lumpur currently. During his stay till February 4, Indian Air Chief Marshal will meet the Malaysian Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Dato Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin and Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force Gen Tan Sri Dato Sri Rodzali bin Daud to explore ways to enhance military ties. As per the agenda of the Indian Air Chief Marshal, there will be a visit to Gong Kedak and Subang Airbases.
