Adding to its growing naval might and blue water capabilities, India has inducted a new Russian-built multi-role stealth frigate that carries the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile into its fleet. INS Tarkash, handed over by Russia late last week, will join the Mumbai-based Western Fleet of the Indian Navy by the end of December this year.
Captain Antony George, an anti-submarine warfare specialist, will be its first commander. The new guided missile frigate was handed over to the Indian Navy by Russia's United Shipping Corporation at Kaliningrad in western Russia, where the Yantar Shipyard is located on the Baltic Sea.

Close on the heels of acquiring the stealth frigate INS Teg last fortnight from Russia, Indian Navy is ready to commission two more ships, namely INS Tanaji and INS Sahayadri, in this month itself. While INS Tanaji will be a base depot ship commissioned today, INS Sahayadri will be the third ship of the Shivalik class of stealth frigates for the navy to be commissioned on July 21. According to Indian Navy, the commissioning of the Base Depot Ship INS Tanaji will be held today at the Mankhurd Naval Base Station.

While the Indian Navy awaits the induction of INS Sahayadri next month, a major boost has been given to its Western Fleet with the latest acquisition of INS Teg. It is the new stealth frigate with weapons and sensors for three-dimensional warfare built by Yantar Shipyard, Russia. INS Teg is the first of three Talwar Class follow-on ships ordered by the Indian Navy. INS Teg was built for the Indian navy by Russia has arrived in the port of Mumbai recently after its trials and crew training. As for the ship’s crew, they have been imparted training at naval training institutes in Russia.

INS Tarkash, a modern frigate that Russia is building for the Indian Navy, has gone out of the Kaliningrad-based Yantar Shipyard for its sea trials ahead of its induction by the end of 2012. Tarkash is the second ship in the three-ship $1.6-billion order from India to Russia to build upgraded Talwar-class frigates. The first ship in this Talwar class follow-on order, INS Teg, was handed over to India in April this year. The third ship, INS Trikand, is at present under construction at the yard and is scheduled for delivery in mid-2013.

India has set April 27 as the date for inducting INS Teg, a guided missile frigate built in Russia, into the Indian Navy. Indian Navy Chief of Material Vice Admiral Ganesh Mahadevan was quoted as saying in New Delhi that INS Teg, the first of the three Teg-class frigates, will be handed over to the Indian Navy at the Yantar shipyard in Russia. INS Teg is the first of three guided missile frigates of the modified INS Talwar-class, a follow-on order that India placed with Russia.
